EEOICPA Prescription Coverage
No-Cost Services
Eligible claimants under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA) are entitled to receive a lump sum payment and full medical benefits to compensate for their illnesses. These medical benefits include coverage for treatment and prescription medications, as well as costs associated with home health care.
EEOICPA Home Health Care/Prescription Coverage
Unfortunately, many of the illnesses covered by the EEOICPA cause severe health problems that can make performing daily tasks difficult, and some can even be fatal. Because of this, the federal government covers the cost of home health care for these affected Department of Energy (DOE) workers, including services provided by licensed nurses, registered home health aides, and trained healthcare professionals. The following home health care and pharmacy services are provided free to beneficiaries of the EEOICPA:
Routine examinations carried out by licensed nurses, including monitoring a patient’s vital signs, heart rate, and lung capacity
Conducting a professional evaluation of a patient’s health status
Communication between a patient’s physician and pharmacy to ensure smooth care and no-cost prescription coverage
Monitoring the effectiveness and side-effects of prescription medications
Assistance with daily activities, such as bathing, using the bathroom, walking, and meal preparation
Physical therapy services
Radiation therapy
Nutritional Counseling
Pain Management
Assisting with and managing paperwork and documentation required by the Department of Labor (DOL)
Providing physical and emotional support and relief for a patient’s family
Personal Caregivers
Personal caregivers play a crucial role in home health care programs, particularly in assisting patients with daily tasks, meal preparation, and light housekeeping. Many programs provide training to family members, enabling them to become certified home health caregivers for their loved ones. Without this certification, family members’ services are not reimbursable under the EEOICPA.
Licensed registered nurses play a crucial role in monitoring a patient’s health and administering medication. This preventive care allows medical professionals to detect adverse reactions to medications or other medical complications early, thereby preventing serious injury.
The nursing staff collaborates closely with each patient’s primary care doctor, pharmacy, federal government, and family to develop a care plan. This plan is typically implemented by a team that includes case managers, nurses, home aides, pharmacies, social workers, dietitians, chaplains, and respiratory therapists to address the full spectrum of a patient’s needs. The most common needs addressed by these home health services and pharmacies include:
Comfort level and pain management
Emotional well-being and mental health
Independence and ability to perform daily tasks
Nutritional and medical requirements
